As a student at Harvard University, a young Theodore Roosevelt championed “the vigorous life,” and the burgeoning sport of American football was something he clearly supported. When he became president, the game often figured in his landmark speeches.

Sam Gravley and the Greer boys basketball team fell at the buzzer to Dorman last week.

Jackets lose at buzzer

The Yellow Jackets had Class AAAAA’s No. 1 team on the ropes last Tuesday, but were unable to pull off the upset on the road, falling to Dorman 60-57 at the buzzer.

With just under five minutes remaining in the game, the Greer boys basketball team led the Cavaliers by 11.

Jones named Defensive MVP

Byrnes standout Khalid Jones was named South Carolina’s Most Valuable Defensive Player during last Saturday’s Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, as the Tar Heels topped the Sandlappers 55-24 at Wofford College. Jones was one of three area players represented in the game, which saw appearances from Greer’s Bradly Thompson and Qua White.

Riverside picks up two wins

The Riverside boys basketball team picked up a pair of wins against Eastside and JL Mann last week, only falling to Greer (55-48).

Warrior head coach Murray Long said the team is now starting to gain traction heading into the Christmas holiday.
